Description

The editor and authors of Youth Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders take an applied approach that serves the needs of clinicians, clinical researchers, and students in the fields of mental health, public health, and medicine (pediatrics, family medicine, and child and adolescent psychiatry, in particular). While the population of adolescents with SUD possesses diverse clinical characteristics, 70%–80% manifest comorbid psychopathology, known also as co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis—that is, the presence of one or more comorbid psychiatric disorders in addition to SUDs. These comorbidities can greatly complicate assessment and treatment, and this book provides clinicians with not only the theory behind the various approaches to SUD but also the practical knowledge that is essential to understand and treat psychiatric comorbidity in these adolescents.

Some of the most prominent investigators in the field have contributed scholarly chapters to the volume, which offers a multitude of useful features:

  • An extensive examination of the etiology of SUD, focusing on whether psychopathology may precede SUD, as in the majority of cases, develop as a consequence of preexisting SUD, or originate from a common vulnerability
  • Consistent emphasis on future directions in clinical research and treatment advancement, which helps the reader identify critical gaps in understanding the relationship between SUD and psychiatric comorbidity among youth
  • Thorough, state-of-the art chapters on the developmental pathways and relationships between substance use and co-occurring psychiatric disorders, screening tools and interventions, and the full range of co-occurring disorders make the book ideal for instructional use
  • Information on risk factors for development of SUD in adolescence, including psychiatric disorders in childhood such as disruptive behavior disorders, mood, anxiety disorders, etc.

Clinically useful and scientifically rigorous, Youth Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders should stimulate further discussion and advancement of the field, ultimately resulting in improved and more effective services and intervention modalities for these youth.

About the Authors

Yifrah Kaminer, M.D., M.B.A., is Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics with the Alcohol Research and the Youth Injury Prevention Centers of the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Farmington, Connecticut.

This is the best resource I can recommend to clinicians, researchers, and educators who need to rapidly access scholarly reviews of adolescent substance use and co-occurring disorders. A wealth of information is packed into each chapter in a reader-friendly style. The authors are research-driven, yet make clear recommendations for clinical practice that can only come from solid experience treating adolescents. This is a much needed, comprehensive compilation of scientific advances that support integration of adolescent substance use and co-occurring disorders – a most welcome addition to the field!—Alessandra N. Kazura, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Tufts University School of Medicine, Medical Director, MaineHealth-Center for Tobacco Independence

This is a unique, comprehensive and readable guide, deeply rooted in theory, science and practice for understanding and treating substance use and co-occurring disorders in youth. It is a particularly important contribution to the literature, given the pervasiveness of these tragic health conditions in youth. This book is essential reading for practitioners and researchers working with youth.—Lynda A.R. Stein, Ph.D. University of Rhode Island, Psychology Department and Social Sciences Research Center, Rhode Island Training School, Director of Research Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies, Brown University

Youth Substance Abuse and Co-occurring Disorders is a well-organized and accessible review of key concepts in the assessment and management of SUDs in adolescents. It offers a valuable launching point in our effort to address the worldwide public health challenge of SUDs in youth.—Erik Loraas, M.D., Resident Editor, AACAP News, 07/01/2016

As a child psychiatry trainee, I find this to be a great didactic resource that is easy to read. My overall sense from reading this book is that each chapter is a great presentation of not only epidemiology and ethology, but also an in-depth understanding of different types of therapy used in treating young people for substance abuse in combination with other psychiatric disorders.—Laura Gavanescu, M.D., Doody's Book Review
